Authorities Identify Suspect in Mass Pedestrian Incident in New Orleans

Authorities in New Orleans have identified Shamsud Din Jabbar, 42, as the alleged perpetrator of the mass pedestrian incident that occurred in the early hours of January 1 on Bourbon Street in the French Quarter. This tragic event resulted in 10 deaths and more than 30 injuries and is being investigated as a possible act of terrorism.

According to reports, Jabbar was shot by police after he drove into a crowd and fired at responding officers. The FBI has indicated that a Ford truck used in the attack contained an Islamic State flag, as well as weapons and a possible improvised explosive device.
Additionally, other similar devices were found nearby, prompting the deployment of specialized teams to assess and eliminate further risks.
Jabbar is a U.S. citizen and Army veteran who reportedly served for a decade in the armed forces. He grew up in Texas, according to preliminary sources cited by NBC News. Authorities are reviewing his background and travel history, as well as how he obtained the vehicle involved, which is believed to have been rented.
New Orleans Police Chief Anne Kirkpatrick stated during a press conference, “Initial evidence suggests that the attacker intended to cause a large number of casualties.” The investigation is ongoing as authorities seek to clarify all details related to this tragic event.
